How much does it really cost to provide drone photography services?
Basically, there are two types of drone operators, the hobbyist and the approved CAA professional operator. There is a distinct difference between the two.
The hobbyist
The hobbyist is a person who may be willing to take some drone shots for as little as £50-£100, but you should think very carefully before hiring one. They are basically using a drone with a camera, and want to make some money, normally 'on the side'. Under CAA regulations, all UAV (drone operators) who provide services for a commercial benefit MUST have full commercial insurance and be licensed to at least the A2 CofC standard. They will rarely have undergone extensive training and results tend to be 'hit and miss'. The main point to consider however is they will NOT be insured for commercial public liability insurance. Should an accident occur, costs could easily be in the order of several thousand of pounds to 100,000's. It is not worth taking the risk!
Professional Drone Operator
A professional drone photographer will have invested a lot of money and time to be able to offer a legal, safe, high quality service. To give you an example, the basic costs to set up include:
- - Commercial standard drone to deliver professional results - £2,500
- - Backup drone in case of equipment failure - £1,000
- - Professional training to achieve CAA qualifications - £750 - £1,000
- - Commercial insurance - £500 - £1,000
- - Computer and software for image editing - £1,000 - £2,000
This provides a brief overview in what's involved to operate a professional drone business. We are commercial drone operators, CAA approved and hold full commercial insurance.
